Hip Santa Ana Coffee Scene: Cafe Calacas
First Saturday of the month means Santa Ana Artwalk. Art galleries, live music and street vendors fill out the streets of downtown Santa Ana letting visitors immerse in the art community that characterizes this city.
During one of our last visits, we stopped by Cafe Calacas, a Mexican coffee house/restaurant that has been on our list of places to visit for a long long time! We couldn’t wait any longer to try their famous Mexi-Frapps. And they didn't disappoint us.
This Mexican cafeteria mixes the traditional lattes with some delicious Mexican flavors like horchata or Mexican mocha. We had two of their "frapps" - horchata and Abuelita - and two ice blended coffees - mocha and vanilla -. My favorite one was the horchata frapp. Really refreshing and cinnamony. The Abuelita frapp has Mexican mocha topped with whipped cream. Also delicious. It was hard to pick our favorite! All their coffees are made with organic beans from the Mexican states of Oaxaca and Guanajuato.
The space is tiny but well used and they have a few tables outside as well. We loved the white brick facade which is part of the historic West End Theater on Fourth Street, a few steps away from 4th Street Market, a 20,000-square-foot food hub that opened its doors last year. Hipster paradise.
